The Food Science Laboratories of the Department of Food Science and Technology at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology have been successfully re-accredited to the ISO/IEC 17025:2017 international standard for testing laboratories, reaffirming the University’s capacity to deliver globally recognised analytical services.
The re-accreditation followed a comprehensive external assessment by the ANSI National Accreditation Board (ANAB), which confirmed that the laboratories continue to meet international requirements for technical competence, quality management systems, and reliable testing outcomes.
The renewed accreditation comes with an updated scope covering key chemical and microbiological food testing services.
The certification affirms the laboratories’ ability to produce accurate, traceable, and internationally accepted results using globally recognised methods, including AOAC, ISO, and APHA standards.
Accredited test parameters include pH, peroxide value, free fatty acid, total starch, aerobic plate count, coliforms, Escherichia coli, Enterobacteriaceae, Staphylococcus species, yeast and mould counts, and Salmonella detection across a broad range of agricultural produce, raw materials, and food products.
In its closing communication, ANAB commended the KNUST Food Science team for successfully completing the assessment and maintaining full compliance with ISO/IEC 17025:2017 requirements, noting the laboratories’ commitment to continual improvement and quality assurance.
Laboratory leadership described the re-accreditation as a boost to the Department’s mandate to support industry, regulatory agencies, researchers, small and medium-scale enterprises, and development partners with credible laboratory services that underpin food safety, quality assurance, product development, and regulatory compliance in Ghana and the wider sub-region.
The Department expressed appreciation to its industry partners, collaborators, regulatory bodies, and clients for their continued trust and support, noting that the achievement further strengthens KNUST’s position as a centre of excellence in food science research, testing, and innovation.
